Jidai Festival

Jidai Matsuri, or the Festival of the Ages, is held annually on October 22 in Kyoto. This grand festival celebrates Kyoto’s history as Japan’s ancient capital and showcases the city’s rich cultural heritage. During the event, a massive historical procession moves from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Heian Shrine, with over 2,000 participants dressed in authentic costumes from different periods of Japanese history, spanning from the 8th to the 19th century.

Each group in the procession represents a specific era, with participants dressed as famous historical figures, samurai, warriors, court nobles, and townspeople. The costumes are meticulously crafted to match the styles of each time period, making the festival a unique opportunity to see the evolution of Japanese fashion and culture.
