 山鉾巡行を観て、祇園祭を観たことにはならない。祭りの主役は神輿です。

祇園祭の本来の神事は「祈り」。即ち「神輿渡御（みこしとぎょ）」です。

7月17日は神幸祭、24日は還幸祭。中御座、東御座、西御座の3基の神輿が渡御します。

17日の山鉾巡行が行われた後の夕刻、八坂神社で出発の儀が執り行われます。
