Kyoto is home to the world’s only tatami instrument performance unit, Japan Tatami Musical Instruments Manufacturing Band (Tatami Band). Born from a passion to share the unique Japanese culture of “tatami” with people around the world, the band is led by Kyoto’s creative tatami craftsman, Mr.Kazuhiro Nishiwaki. He personally crafts and plays these unique instruments. The performances offer an interactive experience—”See, listen, and touch”—while spreading the beauty of Japan’s traditional craftsmanship worldwide. The lively stage includes songs, performances, talks, and fun activities that bring smiles to the audience. So far, the band has held concerts abroad, including in Taiwan and Malaysia, helping to spread tatami culture globally.

Nishiwaki Tatami Shop, run by Mr. Kazuhiro Nishiwaki, received the “Kyoto City Shining Local Enterprise Award” from Kyoto City in 18 January 2023.
The award honors businesses that have been cherished by the local community for many years, contribute to safety and security, preserve cultural traditions, protect the natural environment, and support the active participation of diverse individuals in their operations.
