Murin-an is a villa built between 1894 and 1896 by Aritomo Yamagata, a politician from the Meiji and Taisho periods. The property consists of a garden, a main house, a Western-style building, and a tea house. The garden, considered a masterpiece of modern Japanese landscape design, was created by the seventh-generation landscape artist Jihei Ogawa under the direction of Yamagata. Unlike the traditional symbolic gardens that represented seas with ponds and islands with rocks, this garden reflects a new naturalistic approach, featuring dynamic landscapes resembling satoyama (village mountain) scenery and flowing streams.
