京町家の新築現場を拝見する機会に恵まれました。
I was fortunate to have the opportunity to see the construction site of a newly built Kyo-machiya.
これまで「京町家」といえば、改修や保存が中心であり、新たに建てられることはないものと思っていました。しかし実際に、新築の京町家がひっそりと、しかし確かな意思のもとに建てられている現場に立ち会い、「京都の景観」が“未来に向けて再び築かれている”という事実に、大きな希望を感じました。
Until now, whenever I thought of a “Kyo-machiya,” I primarily associated it with renovation and preservation, believing that new ones were no longer being built. However, witnessing the construction of a new Kyo-machiya—quietly, yet surely, built with a definite purpose—filled me with great hope for the fact that the “Kyoto landscape” is being rebuilt for the future.
行政書士として京都に根ざして仕事をする中で、長年、町家が取り壊され、無機質な集合住宅やコインパーキングに変わっていく光景を幾度となく見てきました。そのたびに、歴史と風土がにじむ京都の町並みが失われていくことへの悲しみを感じてきました。
Working as a certified administrative scrivener rooted in Kyoto, I have for many years witnessed countless scenes of machiya being torn down and replaced by bland apartment complexes or coin-operated parking lots. Each time, I felt a deep sadness at the loss of Kyoto’s townscape, which is steeped in history and local culture.
「京都の景観」は、文化財のように遠くから眺めるだけのものではなく、人が暮らし、働き、営みを続けてこそ息づくものです。だからこそ、今回目にした“京町家の新築”という動きは、単なる建築行為を超え、景観の「再生」への兆しとして、私には映りました。
The “Kyoto landscape” is not merely something to be viewed from a distance like a cultural property; it is something that breathes only when people live, work, and continue their daily lives within it. That is why this movement of “new Kyo-machiya construction” that I witnessed struck me as more than just a building act; it appeared as a harbinger of the “regeneration” of the landscape.
そして同時に、国際観光都市＝京都のあるべき姿として、これらの技術が、日本文化に深い関心を寄せる外国人の若者たちを含む、未来を担う世代に継承されていくプロジェクトの展開の必要性を、私は強く感じました。
Simultaneously, I strongly felt the need for projects to be developed that ensure these techniques are passed down to the future generation, including young foreigners who have a deep interest in Japanese culture, as a vital part of what Kyoto, as an international tourist city, should strive for.
京町家の新築という希望の灯火を、単発の出来事で終わらせることなく、「継ぐ人材を育てる」ことと並行して進めていく——そうした動きがあってこそ、真の意味で“京都の景観の再生”が実現するのではないでしょうか。
The flame of hope ignited by the new construction of Kyo-machiya must not end as a one-off event. The true “regeneration of the Kyoto landscape” will only be realized through concerted efforts that proceed in parallel with “cultivating the talent to inherit these skills.”
京町家の技術は、単なる建築技術ではなく、日本の美意識や生活文化そのものの体現です。それを言葉や映像だけでなく、現場で、手を動かしながら体得できる環境を整えることこそが、真の景観保全に直結していくと考えます。
The technology of Kyo-machiya is not merely a set of building techniques; it is an embodiment of the Japanese aesthetic sense and lifestyle culture itself. I believe that creating an environment where this can be acquired not just through words or images, but on-site, through hands-on practice, is directly linked to genuine landscape preservation.
今後、行政や地域社会、そして私たち専門職が連携し、この文化と技術の継承に取り組む仕組みづくりが進むことを願ってやみません。
I sincerely hope that mechanisms will be developed in the future for the administration, the local community, and we, the specialized professionals, to collaborate in tackling the inheritance of this culture and technology.
