Time Pulled, Light Woven

The Hiki-zome (test pull) for the Saki-matsuri marks the official start of the Gion Matsuri. Seeing the massive Hoko float suddenly loom over the modern concrete streets is always a breathtaking sight. For this moment, I chose the SIGMA 20-200mm F3.5-6.3 DG, a versatile lens that captures everything from sweeping wide shots to tight telephoto details.

The “motion” of a wide 20mm perspective versus the “stillness” of a close-up 200mm.
Had I been wasting time swapping lenses, I would have missed the festival leader’s defining expression and the precise moment the rope snapped taut. Thanks to this incredible mobility, I was more than just a photographer—I became a firsthand witness to a millennium of history coming alive today.

That intense summer scene captured through my viewfinder remains vividly alive in my hands to this day.
