Building the Gion Festival floats for the Ato-matsuri on July 19th

Yamahoko Float Assembly for the Gion Festival’s Ato-matsuri (Latter Festival).

In backalleys cast with the deep shadows of midsummer, artisans practice “Nawagarami”—a traditional technique of assembling massive timbers using only hemp ropes, without a single nail. I quietly focused my lens on the precision of their flawless handiwork.

Amidst Kyoto’s sweltering heat, I felt the incredible mobility of my setup today: the SONY α7C II paired with the FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II.

Using the telephoto reach from a distance, I drew in the intense gaze of the craftsmen. Then, leveraging its exceptional macro capability, I captured the breathtaking details—from the rough texture of the wood grain to the individual fibers of the hemp rope, rendered with vivid clarity.

Hands weaving history, and the memory of wood and rope passed down through generations. A truly special summer day, where even the fingertip resting on the shutter felt the heat.
