Heisei Onnaboko Sayanekai
Heisei Onnaboko Sayanekai is an all-female organization formed in 1996 to carry on the musical traditions of Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri festival.
Traditionally, participation in Gion Matsuri’s floats and festival music was male-only. This group was founded by women who wanted to learn and perform the festival music (Gion-bayashi) and eventually construct a float (Hoko) centered around female participation.
Today, they perform flute, drum, and gong music at various cultural events and offer musical dedications at Yasaka Shrine every July.
To mark their 30th anniversary, Heisei Onnaboko Sayanekai is hosting special commemorative events and performances to celebrate three decades of women preserving and passing down Kyoto’s traditional festival music.
At the Kyoto City Hall Plaza, Heisei Onnaboko Sayanekai builds a full-scale festival float (Hoko), performs live Gion-bayashi music, offers the public a rare chance to board the float and Hands-on Musical Experience.
