The resonating echo of wooden mallets—the unveiling of the Gion Festival.

Amidst Kyoto’s urban landscape of concrete buildings, massive timber structures suddenly emerge. The crisp, dry clack-clack of wooden mallets echoes through the air. Once again, another hot summer has arrived in the Gion Festival neighborhoods.

In the humid breeze of late the rainy season, men work in perfect unison, assembling the giant logs using the traditional Nawagarami (rope-binding) technique. It is a masterpiece of craftsmanship—constructed without a single nail. Equipped with today’s companion, the SONY FE 40mm F2.5 G, I walk through the streets to capture the intensity and intimate atmosphere of this living tradition.

Seamlessly Blending In: The Freedom of a 173g Lens
Photographic journeys through a Kyoto summer are a constant battle against the heat. Yet, this lens attached to my camera weighs a mere 173g. While harboring the full expressive power of a full-frame sensor, its palm-sized footprint offers incredible agility—giving me the freedom to move effortlessly even through the crowded festival alleys.

Without intimidating anyone with oversized, conspicuous gear, I can softly blend into the scene, documenting the passing down of tradition as it unfolds in the artisans’ daily lives.

Beads of sweat rolling down their faces as they give shape to heritage—these moments are true Ichigo Ichie (once-in-a-lifetime) scenes, unique to this very season and this exact time.
